St. Oscar Romero: Salvadoran Prophet and Martyr

Speakers: Cinnamon Sarver, Scott Wright, Jean Stokan

On Oct. 14, 2018, Oscar Romero, martyred Archbishop of San Salvador, was canonized a saint in a ceremony at the Vatican. Cinnamon Sarver, Scott Wright and Jean Stokan attended this historic event. They will share accounts of this celebration, how they have been personally impacted by Romero’s life, and reflect on Romero’s legacy for our church and world today.

Cinnamon Sarver, a local Catholic educator, has traveled to El Salvador four times to study the legacy of Oscar Romero. In 2015 she attended Romero’s beatification Mass in El Salvador. Scott Wright and Jean Stokan reside in Mt. Rainier with their daughter, Maura. Scott accompanied the poor and refugees in El Salvador during the tumultuous 1980’s. He is director of the Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach and is also a member of Pax Christi Metro DC/Baltimore. He is author of  Promised Land: Death and Life in El Salvador; Oscar Romero and the Communion of the Saints: A Biography; and co-author of  Oscar Romero: Reflections on His Life and Writings.

Jean is Justice Coordinator of the Sisters of Mercy of the America Institute Justice Team, focused on Mercy’s critical concerns of: non-violence, immigration, anti-racism, Earth, women and poverty/economic inequality. Jean has worked for many years on human rights in Latin America, building people-to-people ties to strengthen global solidarity. She is a poet and was recently selected as Vice-Chair of Pax Christi USA.
