An ALERT from the 75th Anniversary Catholic Worker Gathering…

The following was composed by an Iran Working Group at last week’s National Catholic Worker Gathering in Worcester, MA. For a Word version of the petition, click here, for more information please note the resource links listed at the bottom of the petition, thank you!

Blockade Congress from Blockading Iran

Defeat House Resolution 362!

We are concerned that more than 200 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored a non-binding resolution (H.Con.Res.362) urging President Bush to utilize “all appropriate economic, political, and diplomatic means” to make certain Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons capability. (Recall the December 2007 National Intelligence Estimate report that expressed “high confidence” that Iran, back in 2003, halted its attempt to develop a nuclear weapon.) The resolution specifically mentions “imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran.” An embargo entailing “stringent inspections” would necessitate enforcement through a naval blockade – an act of war.

The consequences of this blockade would be devastating for the Iranian people and the stability of the Middle East. This military confrontation with Iran “would be worse than anything possible. It would turn the region into a fireball,” said the head of the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamad El Bardei.

We call upon members of the House of Representatives to oppose this resolution. We call upon members of Congress to support nonviolent alternatives to resolve any conflicts between the United States and Iran.

Name Signature Address

Do not let your opposition to military “solutions” end here! Hit the phones, talk with others, and engage in nonviolent acts of civil disobedience for the cause of peace. BLOCKADE CONGRESS FROM BLOCKADING IRAN!

Please mail this petition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and to your local representative.

Since the gathering, some of us have also been made aware of S.3227, a separate bill which threatens Iran with Sanctions.
