A Clarification of Thought Event

Kathy Kelly, long-time peacemaker and co-founder of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, will describe her recent experiences in Gaza during the final days of the Operation Cast Lead assault, and also discuss ways to nonviolently resist the UASs- Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones), used to attack people in Gaza, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. She and 14 companions were recently arrested at the gates of Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, headquarters for U.S. usage of the drones.

Tunnel Vision

Bill Quigley, a human rights lawyer and law professor at Loyola New Orleans and Audrey Stewart are also in Egypt and contributed to this article.

Arish, Egypt–As I write, we can hear the dull thud of explosions in
the distance. Israeli air strikes continue to blast targets in southern Gaza. Merciless bombing of the small Gaza Strip continues into a third week. I heard some people here in Egypt wonder if the Israeli Air Force must be running out of places and people to target.  But perhaps the surveillance drones we heard and saw flying over the Rafah border crossing today hunted down more spots on which bombers could fix their cross-hairs. Perhaps they spotted underground tunnels.  The Israeli government has, reportedly, already destroyed 80% of the tunnels that connect Gaza with the outside world. (more…)

The international media are focusing on this event, which is provoking indignation or concern in world opinion, and these reactions will be even stronger when people know of the parallel drama – it began on 27 December 2008 with the first Israeli bombardments of Gaza and is continuing less visibly with the use by Israel’s Air Force of “GBU-39″ bombs.
