Two Members of Dorothy Day CW Hold 3-Day Vigil/Fast for Iraqi Journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi

muntadar-al-zaidi

We, the members of Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, understand and sympathize with the sentiment expressed in the action of Iraqi journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi, who hurled his shoes at President Bush, shouting, “This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq.”

While we in our own actions strive to reflect Christ’s nonviolent love, we find it outrageous that Muntadar al-Zaidi faces two years in prison for his witness. The policies of Mr. Bush and his administration are directly responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis and 4,200 U.S. troops, and for the displacement of 5 million Iraqis. If there had been no unnecessary invasion in Iraq, Mr. al-Zaidi would not have cause for his incredible sorrow. (more…)

While Huong’s paintings capture every consequence of war, so does The Peace Mural. It exposes the consequences of war
in all its nakedness—the “collateral damage” also known as human beings. It was imperative that she bring the public into the art itself. It is about their lives too. (more…)

Seven members from IVAW’s LA Chapter staged an early morning action on October 11th, placing 4,200 miniature soldiers around a gas station along with posters declaring “The Price of Gas: 4171 US SOLDIERS” (since the action, the number of US soldiers has climbed to 4,193). Participants in the Operation W.A.N.T. (We Are Not Toys) said their goal was to show average Americans what 4,171 US Soldiers looks like and to connect the deaths of US troops to this country’s dependence on foreign oil.
